The concept of Hatha Yoga is perhaps the oldest one. “Hatha” literally means “force”
or “persistence”. Thus, the Hatha Yoga is based on the concept of holding of different asanas for a
certain duration of time (min 10 seconds and max depends on you ).
But doesn’t this question bother you that how does holding an asana/posture benefits a person? If
yes, then we have this answer for you. Julius Wolff was a German anatomist. From his research he
found that the amount of pressure/load that is applied on a bone is directly proportional to the
density and strength of the bone. This means the more pressure or load you apply on your bone the
denser and stronger it becomes. The idea behind Hatha Yoga is also same. The longer you hold an
asana the more pressure you exert on your bone and the stronger it becomes. Apart from physical
benefits it also has a great impact on the mind. When you hold an asana, it requires you to draw all
your attention towards your body and posture. Hence, you mind becomes more focused and still.
Many people feel that Yoga is an exercise meant for lazy people and it does not strengthen your
body, but they think that way because of lack of knowledge on Yoga.
